Project MFG’s Additive Manufacturing competition challenges teams and showcases the latest in 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing.

Project MFG’s Additive Manufacturing competition tests skills related to the additive manufacturing process, from design, economics, and change orders to slicing, post-processing, and assembly.

Teams mirror real workplace dynamics in a competitive setting, fostering team interdependence, time and budget constraints, and promoting strategic “production” approaches.

Project MFG competitions are based on the design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing of a “product” by teams of multi-disciplinary specialists. It is a tournament-style event in which teams of students compete against one another to complete a trade project.

The Competition Playbook

3 schools participated

  •  Lake Creek High School
  • Ball High School
  • William B. Travis High School

On May 2nd, local high schools arrived at the TEES Facility of Advanced Manufacturing on the Texas A&M – Rellis Campus to participate in the additive Project MFG Advanced Manufacturing Competition

The event involved three local high schools — Ball High School, William B. Travis High School, and Lake Creek High School. They were challenged to design a 1:43 slot car body to fit a chassis. Teams prior to the event created a draweing for the slot car frame so they could complete the actual programming and 3D printing within the time frame. Judging criteria included arriving with the necessary designs and materials needed, ensuring proper post-processing of the car body, and testing if the race car could successfully complete a jump on the track provided.

Additionally, each team had to bring a 3D-printed bridge to the competition, which was then tested with weighted blocks to determine its load-bearing capacity. After the competition, an award ceremony was held to announce the winner who will be recieving a brand new Bambu Lab X1-Carbon Combo 3D Printer!
