Honolulu, Hawaii — On November 7, 2025, Project MFG hosted an award ceremony at Pacific Shipyards International (PSI) in Honolulu, recognizing top participants from a statewide welding competition that celebrated technical skill, creativity, and career readiness.
In early October, 27 high-school students from across Hawaii received welding kits and detailed instructions to fabricate a model of the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Fighter Jet. After completing their projects, instructors selected the top two students from each school to advance as finalists. Those finalists were then invited to bring their completed projects to an in-person event at PSI, where the top 14 were evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges.
“The students who participated in this year’s competition represent the future of Hawaii’s workforce,” said Rob White from Project MFG. “Events like this not only celebrate technical skill but also inspire collaboration, innovation, and pride in craftsmanship. We’re honored to partner with organizations like Pacific Shipyards International and leaders across the military and education sectors who share our vision of strengthening America’s skilled trades pipeline.”
Upon arrival, students and instructors were given a tour of Pacific Shipyards International, Hawaii’s largest privately owned shipyard. Judging took place during the tours and was completed before the groups returned. This year’s judging panel included Derek Barbadillo from Pacific Shipyards International, Mike Hess, a professional welder from the Big Island, and Bobby McDonogh, another skilled professional from the Big Island.
During the ceremony, students and guests met the crew of the USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118), including Commander Ryan P. Kelly, who received a replica of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, which was featured in Project MFGS 2024 Maritime Welding Competition. Commander Kelly was joined by 12 crew members from the ship, who participated in a Q&A session and presented attendees with USS Daniel Inouye Challenge Coins in recognition of their dedication to learning and excellence.
The event also featured remarks from Iain Wood, Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Shipyards International. Since 2001, PSI has played a pivotal role in Hawaii’s maritime industry, providing hands-on opportunities for tradespeople to enter careers in shipbuilding and fabrication. Wood encouraged students to explore pathways into shipbuilding and shared insight into what skills and mindsets help professionals succeed in the industry.
At the conclusion of the event, Project MFG announced the top three statewide welding competition winners, honoring them for their craftsmanship, technical precision, and attention to detail. The judges also provided feedback and shared advice on how the competitors could refine their skills and approach future projects differently. The top three winners received cash prizes, $1,000 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third, recognizing their outstanding performance and commitment to advancing the skilled trades across Hawaii.
“The event was filled with enthusiasm and meaningful learning moments for students and instructors alike,” said Stephen Sasaki, member of the Kuʻi Hao Advisory Team.
Project MFG continues to champion hands-on education and industry collaboration to build the next generation of skilled trade professionals. Through competitions like this, students not only develop their technical skills but also gain valuable exposure to real-world career opportunities within Hawaii’s thriving maritime and manufacturing sectors.
