On September 22nd, a total of 21 students from six local welding programs participated in the Project MFG Maritime Welding Competition at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula Mississippi. The event commenced with a welcome from the leadership of Ingalls Shipbuilding and Project MFG. Each student was provided with work boots, coveralls, a welding shield, and swag bags, all of which they were allowed to keep after the competition. To enhance their understanding of the maritime welding industry, the students participated in a driving tour of the shipyard before arriving at the competition location.
The competition took place at the Ingalls shipyard, where the students were faced with the challenge of completing a project within a 2-hour time frame. They were required to utilize GMAW processes to fabricate a carbon steel pressure vessel. Detailed prints and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) were provided to the competitors during the competition. Once the projects were completed, judges thoroughly examined the vessels for any potential leaks, as well as assessed their overall appearance and fit-up.
“Hosting events like Project MFG is an excellent opportunity to collaborate with our educational partners in raising awareness about careers at Ingalls,” Ingalls Shipbuilding Community Relations Manager Lisa Bradley said. “Connecting young students from the local community and showcasing their talents is an important part of our mission and one of the ways we promote the opportunities available right here in Pascagoula.”
Throughout the day, the students received enthusiastic support from their parents, educators, Ingalls employees, and the leadership team. Following the conclusion of the competition, the students had the opportunity to network and listen to insightful speeches from Ingalls Shipbuilding’s leadership. Additionally, all participants received an offer of contingent employment with Ingalls Shipbuilding once they graduated from their respective programs – a pleasant and promising surprise that highlighted the value of such competitions.

1st – Jonathan Hardy – Moss Point High School
2nd – Nicholas Taper – Moss Point High School
3rd – Ethan Williams – Pascagoula High School
