[Knoxville, Tennessee, November 9, 2023] – Project MFG 2023 SEC Machining Competition – powered by ACE took place November 9th in Knoxville Tennessee. This event was held to highlight skilled SEC university teams, to promote advanced manufacturing education and training, and to learn more about CNC machining. This year’s competitors were:
- University of Missouri
- University of Florida
- Mississippi State University
- Texas A&M University
- University of Tennessee, Knoxville
During the competition, local high school students and other visitors were encouraged to participate in the career discovery day. Manufacturing companies and educational platforms spoke to the students and visitors about the importance of the manufacturing industry and the opportunities available. Students were invited to watch and cheer on the competitors.
Each team was tasked with completing and assembling an air-powered motor project. The teams competed in a timed competition racing against the clock to finish their project. Once each team finished their air-powered motor project, they were assembled and put to the ultimate test by attaching an airline to the motor to record the motor’s functioning performance. As the crowd eagerly watched on, all 5 motors were started up and RPM noted.
At the end of the competition, the winner was selected based on time, cost, quality, and motor performance. The 2023 SEC Machining Champion is the University of Tennessee, Knoxville!
Project MFG is proud to bring influential events that create a movement and bring together partnerships of employers, educators, and communities to inspire the next generation of highly skilled trade professionals. Project MFG collaborates with these local communities to find ways to elevate and help raise awareness of the need for highly skilled trade professionals in the area. This year’s competition was made possible by a partnership between the DoD Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program, Project MFG, America’s Cutting Edge (ACE), the Southeastern Advanced Machine Tools Network, the MADE Tennessee Manufacturing Facility, the five participating SEC universities, MSC Industrial Supply (cutting tools),
and ZEISS (precision measurement).
