Importance of Metrology

Here at Project MFG metrology plays a vital role in our competitions to ensure that all projects submitted to our competitions are measured and assessed equally and fairly. Using metrology also helps us be able to maintain high standards and ensure that the finished components that are being submitted will have the ability to fit within the required specifications just like in manufacturing industries.

What is Metrology

Metrology, the science of measurement, provides the foundation for precision and quality in manufacturing.

Metrology is important for keeping everything consistent and within standards, whether we’re talking about calibrating complex machinery or checking the dimensions of small parts. With tools like laser scanners, coordinate measuring machines, and digital calipers, experts can get precise measurements. In manufacturing, these accurate measurements are essential for creating high-quality products. They help cut down on waste and mistakes, making sure every part fits together just right.

This sort of metrology is used in high-precision manufacturing processes like what would be used in a CubeSat. It’s very important in the early stages of manufacturing to ensure the parts are being made correctly which help later on in doing something like sampling on a regular basis to maintain quality control across all product runs.

How metrology helps us

At Project MFG, we utilize metrology as a key inspection process to ensure that parts are manufactured accurately according to specifications and function as intended in their design. It’s most important in our assessment portion of our competitions because it helps us evaluate if our competitors are production highly accurate parts for the models and projects they make.

During our inspection and assessment process we work with our partner Zeiss to use their CMM’s which are Coordinate Measuring Machines. These machines provide reliable and high-quality coordinate measuring technology.
